Life’s a Journey. Week 9: Favourite childhood books

Having paid homage to your (and my) Grandparents last week, I thought we’d trot a little further down the Lane of Memory this week with some literary indulgence.

What were the books that inspired you as a child? Read on, and share your own memories with us here!

…..and Timmy, the Dog….

From the age of about 9 years old, I became captivated by Enid Blyton’s stories of the terribly British Famous Five. A group of…..well, frankly not terribly well supervised children who spent all summer long looking for trouble and usually finding it.

My parents used to refer to me as The Bookworm. I would spend most of our summer holidays with my not inconsiderable nose wedged between the pages of one of these un-put-downable stories, and would sprint from one book to the next as if the pages were food and I hadn’t eaten for weeks. Perhaps the very fact that I was on holiday, with the sound of the sea nearby afforded me the chance to imagine myself as part of the gang of 5 sleuths, solving mysteries in their Cornish landscape? All too often, I outpaced even myself. The stash of 4 books, intended to last me a fortnight would often run out and we would have to replenish my supplies. Trust me, it was not easy to get your daughter a Famous Five ‘fix’ when you were camping in some remote corner of Wales in the early 1970s….No Secret Seven or Mallory Towers for me! They simply wouldn’t do.

Other books which left a similarly lasting impression upon me were the Ladybird hardbacks for children. A sort of 1960s/70s ‘learn to read’ series of both non-fiction and classic fairy tales. By far the most marvellous of these was Cinderella, or at least it was to my 7 year old self. I was captivated by the illustrations of this dreamy Princess. I can still recognise the cover of this book after all these years.

And then there was Mrs Pepperpot. A slightly dotty old lady who could shrink to the size of a… well, pepperpot!

Looking back now, the Famous Five seem ridiculously outdated. My eldest son has never agreed to read them. Proof perhaps that you cannot feed the mind of a child of the Millennium with the ‘lashings of gingerbeer’ and ‘Tally Ho’ dialogue from a time gone by. But they will forever stay dear to me, a tiny part of childhood wedged firmly within my family stories.

In those formative years, in the days before TV dominated our every waking hour, and when our parents expected us to find entertainment in the simplest of pleasures, a good book was often the place where I lost myself and subsequently found my joy. What about you? Do you have memories of particular books from your childhood or more recent past?

  1. Mine were not classics but the babysitters club and sweet valley high books. I would love to find the whole set of the boxcar children for my daughter to read one day. Maybe Nancy free too!

  38. I used to love reading The Famous five books and Mallory Towers I was a bit of an Enid Blyton fan. I doubt my boys will ever read the FF either. And I had the Mrs Pepperpot collection too!

  39. I was never into The Famous Five but did love Malory Towers. However I share your love of Mrs Pepperpot and the Cinderella book with the huge dresses which I adored.

  40. Gosh that was a serious trip down memory lane!! My grandparent had those Ladybird books and like you I loved Enid Blyton, it seems sad that they are outdated, though not all as we have just finished the Magic Faraway Tree and both boys loved it!

  41. I remember reading secret seven mysteries back to back on holidays and then Nancy drew took over :-)
