This post is part of a weekly series of ‘link-up’ Posts which reflect on life’s journey, old memories and family stories (see below for more info).
So I am sitting on the sofa, alone. First glass of wine of the week (I know!!) launched and ready. I fancy a girly movie….no such luck. I am led into a downward spiral of bitterness and disappointment. What the hell has happened to our Saturday Night TV?
The edges of my fury are only vaguely softened by the recollection of my childhood. Saturday night used to be a feast of family fun, a bonanza of excitement to my immature eyes (or am I wearing those rose-coloured contact lenses again?)
Where is Tomorrow’s World with the old fella and Judith Hann? Cool science. Where is the Generation Game which used to make me wet my knickers laughing, whilst munching our Saturday sausage-and-eggs tea?
Even though there were only three channels back then, and the screen went black at bedtime, there seemed to be an endless list of wonders to enjoy. I’d even be prepared to enjoy the waiting, whilst the Test Card girl with the blackboard dominates the screen, if I could be rewarded with one of these….
How about a little bit of Monkey Magic? “Born from an egg on a mountain top…”
No? Let’s change channel then. (I used to have to get up and walk across the room back in the day to do this, so we rarely varied from the BBC. Maybe this is why there were only 3 channels. My dad always insisted that ITV was ‘trash’ anyway, so that left us with two to choose from. Since BBC 2 was more dull than a day at school, we were invariably left with one channel.)
How about escaping to a whole different mountain? The Waltons was one of my must-see shows for years. I fell in love with John-Boy and longed to eat at their giant table.
If family drama was your thing, then you MUST have been a fan of Little House on the Prairie. Even now when I hear this theme tune, I’m transported back to my childhood.
Black Beauty? Best theme tune EVER. Unbeatable for reducing small girls to tears. That’s all I can say on the matter….*sniff*
For something lighter, you couldn’t beat a Saturday morning with Noel, Keith and Maggie on Multicoloured SwapShop! Never swapped a damn thing, how about you?
Animal Magic was another of those distant, but warm recollections from early childhood. Johnny Morris and his animal voices – can’t see this holding much muster with the kids of 2012….
And the 1970s equivalent of Ben10 (something to sit the kids in front of whilst you do the washing) was Tarzan. Man with Chimp named Cheetah. Ruddy marvellous.
I glance back to Britain’s Got Talent…..Where is Tiswas? Crystaltipps and Alistair? Pipkins? Play Away? Record Breakers?!!!!!
As we grew older, my bro and I used to flop in from school and turn on the old brown wooden box, grab a packet of crisps (my bro had a really bad habit of cutting great wads of cheese into his packet and shaking them up before eating – there’s a random memory!) and crash out in front of Vision On and Grange Hill. My parents worried that this latter programme was a bad influence – visions of me turning up at school one day and spiking my teacher’s flask with Senakot or something……
So here I sit, wine glass now empty, head reeling with nostalgia, humming the theme tune to Charlie’s Angels and wondering how the hell I got so old so fast. I have 750 channels to choose from – I think I’ll read a book.

Why users still use to read news papers when in this technological globe everything is presented on net?
Yesterday, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iPad and
tested to see if it can survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be
a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now destroyed and she has 83 views.
I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!
Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the pictures on this blog loading?
I’m trying to figure out if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
