This post is part of a weekly series of ‘link-up’ Posts which reflect on life’s journey, old memories and family stories (see below for more info).
Music has power, doesn’t it? The sound of something as familiar as your own skin can cut through the layers of years and transport you immediately back to the time and the place where you were when you wore the grooves out of the vinyl.
In my case that time (according to the label on this vintage 6 inch) was 1978; the place, my parents’ dining room; the song, ‘Never let her slip away’ by Andrew Gold. I know you’ve never heard of him. Hell, who has? But that’s not the point here.
He was my first. *sigh*. He popped my record shop cherry and cost me, like, pence. Jennifer Rush came and went, as did Boney M, The Commodores and Styx, but The Gold
still holds a special place in my ageing heart.
Wanna hear what you were missing?
OK, so he had a face for radio, but what a song.
So, I want to hear from all of you. What was the very first record (or cd if you want to really rub my nose in it) you ever bought? When was it, where did you buy it and what do you feel when you listen to it today? Does it conjure up teen angst or the love of your life? Were you studying to it or being romanced by a spotty, groping youth?

Loved your post, as always! Cannot remember my first one, but digged out my “Final Countdown” record when Sexy Hubby and I recently went to see the band in concert. Wanted to show Second Daughter what they looked like at the time…
I still have ALL of my old records. When I showed First Daughter my collection a few years ago, she said: Oh, CDs were THAT big when you were young, Mummy?” LOL!!
First CD was Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”… bought by my Dad as a present, without me asking!
Loving the memories!!! I can’t bear to part with my vinyl, I don’t know why but there’s something so ‘vintage’ and reminiscent of good times/youth about them!! Thanks so much for commenting!
Happy you like the memories!
)) Holding onto my vinyl too… And just realised that with all I wrote in my comment, I could have done a blogpost instead, really…
Next time! Need more link-ups on the nostalgia weekly!! Bring some friends….
Love this! So much fun! The FIRST ONES I BOUGHT were Captain and Tennille, Boogie Fever, (The Sylvers) and Donny and Marie Osmond records of course!!!
